The complexity of medical professionals’ activities requires a comprehensive competence-based and person-centred approach to their training with a particular emphasis on self motivation enhancement. The review of Western scholars’ studies has revealed the theoretical background of the contextual teaching and learning effectiveness in the development of main physician’s competencies. At French medical departments this approach is implemented mostly in forms of problem-based learning, comprehension of situation, and development of clinical thinking. The highest efficiency of these teaching techniques is achieved with such curriculum, when teaching units from subject disciplines are fused together around a meaningful organising theme/concept such as body systems or community medicine, which includes horizontal and vertical integration
