dc.description.abstract This monograph chapter traces the theoretical and methodological evolution of developing foreign language communicative competence in military officers, charting the transition from classical linguodidactic approaches to contemporary NATO standardization frameworks (specifically STANAG 6001). Historically, military language instruction relied heavily on structuralist and grammar-translation paradigms, which prioritized passive reading comprehension and isolated terminological memorization over real-time operational interaction. However, the realities of modern multinational coalition warfare and Euro-Atlantic integration demand a fundamental paradigm shift toward pragmatic, action-oriented proficiency. The study critically synthesizes foundational models of communicative competence (Hymes, Canale and Swain, Bachman) and adapts their structural components—linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic—to the high-stakes realities of military command and control (C2). Particular emphasis is placed on harmonizing national professional military education (PME) curricula with NATO STANAG 6001 descriptors across all four language skills. By integrating Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), authentic operational case studies, and simulation-based training, the proposed pedagogical framework ensures that officers achieve the communicative autonomy and linguistic interoperability required for joint defense missions. en
