dc.description.abstract The article presents the results of a study into the student body of the Odesa Higher Women’s Medical Courses in 1910-1920, specifically, data on its quantitative, ethno-confessional, and social composition, as well as an analysis of the religious and material factors that influenced women’s access to higher medical education in Odesa in the early 20th century. The source base of the study consists of documents from Fond No. 62 ‘Odesa Higher Women’s Medical Courses’, of the State Archives of the Odesa Region, including reports of the Pedagogical Council, lists of female students, documents concerning tuition fees, petitions, and students’ personal files. The dynamics of the number of students during the first years of the Courses’ operation, as well as during the First World War, the revolutionary events, and the socio-political transformations of 1917-1920, are analyzed. A gradual decrease in the number of women admitted to the Courses in 1910- 1914 and a sharp increase in enrollment to 300 students in 1915 are established. At the same time, the maintenance of a substantial student body in the following years indicates a sustained demand for women’s medical education even amid large-scale social upheavals. The ethno-confessional composition of the female students has been established, with particular attention paid to Jewish women’s access to education and the impact of the state-imposed percentage quota that restricted their admission to the Courses. The social background of the female students were identified; they included representatives of various estates and social groups – nobility, townspeople, clergy, peasantry, honorary citizens, as well as daughters of representatives of various professional groups. Such diversity indicates a gradual broadening of the social base of women’s medical education. Archival documents attest to the material difficulties that accompanied the education of many students. Petitions for exemption from tuition fees and for financial assistance supplement the statistical data with specific life stories, demonstrating women’s determination to obtain a profession despite financial, family, and social obstacles. It is concluded that the Odesa Higher Women’s Medical Courses were not only an educational institution that provided hundreds of women with an opportunity to obtain professional medical education and pursue a career in medicine, but also an important manifestation of the modernization processes of the early 20th century. At the same time, access to education and the possibility of completing it remained dependent on confessional, social, and material restrictions. en
