Podkupko, T.
This presentation is devoted to the analysis of the historical aspects of the Black Sea dimension of Ukrainian statehood and security in the mid-17th to early 18th centuries. It focuses on the struggle for access to the Black Sea as a key factor in shaping Ukraine’s security policy and economic development in the context of confrontation with Russian aggression. The interests of other regional powers are also briefly examined. The paper emphasizes that since the times of Kyivan Rus’, and later during the Cossack-Hetmanate, access to the sea and control over Black Sea communications determined Ukraine’s international status, its ability to conduct foreign trade, and its capacity to ensure strategic security.

<summary type="text">Odesa Greeks among the honored citizens: attaining state in the estate-based society of the 19th century
Uvarova, O.
The article presents the results of the identification of members of&#13;
the Odesa Greek community who belonged to a special estate (state, social&#13;
standing) of the Russian Empire – the honored citizens. Based on archival&#13;
materials, a list was compiled of those Odesa Greeks who personally attained&#13;
the status of honored citizens, that is, those who were the first in their families&#13;
to acquire this legal standing through formal petitions to the government. The&#13;
originality of the study lies in the introduction into scholarly circulation of data&#13;
derived from the holdings of the State Archive of the Odesa Region, which has&#13;
made it possible to fill an existing gap in the history of the Greek community of&#13;
Odesa by identifying lesser-known individuals. The analysis of the ethnic&#13;
dimension of the social institution of honored citizenship, examined within the&#13;
estate-based legal framework, has enabled the construction of a social profile of&#13;
the Greek honored citizens. The overwhelming majority of them were&#13;
merchants registered in the upper guilds – a prerequisite under the law for&#13;
obtaining honored citizenship, which facilitated their inclusion in this status,&#13;
most often on a hereditary basis. The privileges associated with honored&#13;
citizenship made it attractive to Odesa Greeks during their integration into the&#13;
estate-based society of the Russian Empire. In turn, the institution of honored&#13;
citizenship functioned as an imperial attempt to consolidate the commercial and&#13;
financial elite.

In the mid-17th centuries, the security, peace, and independence of Ukraine were inextricably linked to the development of foreign relations with various states, with Sweden playing a significant role. Although Sweden never shared a common border with Ukraine, the destinies of both nations are closely intertwined. Despite changes in the foreign policy priorities of both states over time, our historical paths have been deeply connected. Sweden and Ukraine have always been allies in global international politics, with both striving for neutrality, autonomy, and independence.

Despite the apparent geographical isolation of the Black Sea, free&#13;

Furthermore, according to Samuel Huntington, Eastern Europe is still&#13;
a geopolitical and civilization area of rivalry between Western Europe and&#13;
Russia and the line of confrontation runs through Ukraine and Romania.

It was the solution of the main economic issues that was important for the life and development, maintenance of self-reliance, independence of Ukraine at that time. The most vivid examples of solutions to various economic issues are contained in the documents of that era: the hetman's universals, international agreements, contracts, and their projects. The state-makers of that time defended economic security both on the battlefield and in the diplomatic realm. Many provisions have not lost their relevance even today

<summary type="text">Geopolitics of Central and Eastern Europe and World War I
Bondarenko, D.
Central and Eastern Europe is a specific historical region which&#13;
experienced the domination of the conservative dynasties such as the&#13;
Romanovs (the Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp’s branch), the Hohenzollerns,&#13;
the House of Habsburg (Habsburg-Lorraine) and the conservative systems of&#13;
international relations, for instance, the Holy Alliance (Heilige Allianz), the&#13;
League of the Three Emperors (Drei-Kaiser-Abkommen), etc. Starting with the&#13;
Congress of Vienna until the outbreak of the First World War, the monarchical&#13;
conservatism of the Russian and the Austrian Empires had resisted&#13;
irredentism of the neighbouring nations and nationalism inside the empires.&#13;
The old regime was able to retain itself due to the solidarity of the dynasties.&#13;
However, the imperial rivalries in Central and Eastern Europe in the late 19th&#13;
and early 20th centuries, accompanied by the irredentism of the divided nations&#13;
(sometimes even stimulated by the rivals) had eroded the solidarity of the&#13;
monarchies. Before World War I, the balance of power in the region had been&#13;
precarious in which Austria-Hungary played a certain role of a sui generis&#13;
bulwark against Russian expansion into the Balkans. Thus, the clash of Russian&#13;
(Pan-Slavism) and German (Mitteleuropa) geopolitical conceptions in Central&#13;
Europe amid the violation of the principle of the Vienna system caused the&#13;
First World War.
