За даними ВООЗ, у 2010 р. вже понад 240 млн людей хворіють на цукровий діабет (ЦД). В Україні зареєстровано понад 1 млн хворих на діабет. Цукровий діабет підвищує ризик розвитку катаракти та глаукоми, проте найбільшу загрозу для зору становить ураження сітківки ока. Незалежно від типу діабету (1-го чи 2-го), більш як у 80 % хворих на діабет людей (із тривалістю захворювання понад 10 років) розвиваються ті чи інші форми ретинопатій (захворювання сітківки ока), які зазвичай можуть призводити до сліпоти.
The analysis of contemporary data on pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy and role played by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF) in mechanisms of proliferation processes in retina was made. It was stressed that regulation of production and functional activity of VEGF and PEDF might be achieved via artificial irritation of brain structures (cerebellum) using different factors of physical nature. Own data on the heightening of the resistance of neural tissue to hypoxia after electrical irritation of paleocerebellar cortex are delivered.
